WSMV Channel 4 reports that a Metro Nashville judge now has the matter of whether the EnglishFirst referendum should be on this November's ballot in her hands and expects to issue a decision tonight.
But the judge says she cannot force the referendum on the ballot. That still will be up to the Metro Election Commission, which rejected its inclusion by a 3-2 vote last month.
If absentee ballots are to make it out by printing and mailing time, the election commission would have to meet tomorrow by the latest, WSMV reported.
Don't count on that.
Ultimately, it looks like the referendum will be derailed for this November, which would be a shame. If opponents cannot win at the ballot box by the rightness of their arguments in a republic, then there is no honor in stopping it with a wrong decision by a commission.
