Our Lady of Guadalupe choir to sing at Ball

The already excellent, yet young, choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Nashville has agreed to appear at the Music City Charity Inaugural Ball to build diverse support behind the presidency of Barack Obama.

The choir has been asked to sing patriotic songs, in Spanish, to emphasize the richness that diversity brings to our nation, including multiple languages. By next decade, the largest English-speaking country in the world will be China. Bilingual citizenry is becoming a basic requirement in the global marketplace.

Ironically, the choir will appear two days before a Jan. 22 referendum on making English the only language for government operations in Nashville. Approval by voters would make Nashville the only large metropolitan city to forbid other languages in the operations of its government.

Our Lady's celebrated its first-year anniversary on Dec. 12, 2008, after Father Joe Pat Breen completed a fund-raising campaign of $2 million. Breen is pastor of nearby St. Edward Catholic Church, which is my home parish.

Breen will be in attendance at the Ball.
