Ah, the black and gold dream continues. And may we never wake up.
The new America's Team came back from a 13-0 deficit, scored two touchdowns, then shut down Auburn's offense when it counted as the 'Dores beat Tigers for the first time tonight since 1955.
I almost had the final score right. I had Auburn at 13 points but thought the 'Dores would reach 17 in winning. A late interception in Tiger territory sealed the victory and sent the Vanderbilt program toward the top 10 in the polls and who knows what other laurels that come to a successful NCAA Division I program.
Earlier in the day on ESPN's Game Day, entertainer Lee Corso rubbed it in to Vandy fans by donning an Auburn helmet and a VOLS jersey to predict the game's winner. But the 'Dores showed Corso to be full of it.
At 5-0, Vandy is all but assured of its first bowl game appearance since the 1970s. And the respect it will gain nationwide for being an institution of higher education first and a successful football program second will be substantial. This City on a Hill continues set the standard locally and nationally.
Celebrate tonight's victory -- not just for beating Aiburn -- but the precedent it will set in making Vandy a traditional power in the classroom and on the football field.
