Palin fails to convince in 'pro-life' argument

Gov. Sarah Palin used the interruption of a crying child during a weekend campaign speech to try and prove her "pro-life" credentials.

She failed.

Palin asked that the child be allowed to cry. But she followed that request with rhetoric of singling out the infant as the only innocent life worthy of defense.

I've also heard crying, last June in a nursing home of a former piano teacher with Alzheimer's pleading for help to go to the bathroom. Palin did not mention those innocents.

I've heard the crying of young children scared by gunshots outside their windows that penetrated their bedrooms walls. Palin did not mention those innocents.

I've heard the crying of children angry and frustrated of just not getting it in the classroom, then forced into the humiliation of special education. Palin did not mention those innocents.

I've heard the crying of mothers fleeing the abuse of spouses, trying to protect their children and their own lives with no money of their own. Palin did not mention those innocents.

The list goes on and on. But Palin chooses only to focus on the child within the womb when it comes to claiming a pro-life label. It's not deserved. Nor is it deserved by those who oppose abortion, then block funding for needed pre-natal care, post-birth health care to adulthood, needed resources for a good education to break the cycle of poverty and social programs to rescue mothers in need of affordable day care and job training.

Being "pro-life" demands attention to more than just one issue. It demands a broader focus on the people of Matthew 25 and more.
