Predators' stay in Nashville may be short-lived

The Globe-Mail newspaper in Toronto reports that a quarter share ownership in the Nashville Predators is being sought by the Canadian millionaire who tried to lure the team north of the border earlier this year.

How can he do that? Because Nashville Mayor Karl Dean negotiated with a group of buyers that included a man who later filed for bankruptcy. That's how adept Dean was in negotiating a disastrous deal for taxpayers.

Now the Canadian businessman is in a federal bankruptcy court making an offer to buy the quarter share of the Predators. If he gets it, look for him to continue to press to move the team.

Then there is the poor deal Dean negotiated. It allows the Predators to leave if they do not get average attendance of 14,000. The team did not get that kind of attendance last season. And it won't come close this season in a recession that will continue to worsen. Williamson County residents aren't shopping in droves at Walmart for nothing.

If you're a Predators' fan, get one last look this season.

Tim,

Balsillie can do all he wants; the NHL will NEVER allow a team in Hamilton, Ontario, because it is 40 miles from Toronto and 60 miles from Buffalo, two established NHL markets.

The NHL wants to keep the Preds in Nashville if at all possible to grow their US coverage.
