For the first time since I've been in Nashville, a prominent politician of the same political party actually is standing up to Democrat In Name Only Gov. Phil Bredesen.
State House Minority Leader Gary Odom of Davidson County is coming back with fighting words and integrity in standing up to below the belt comments about him and his leadership fight by Bredesen.
The governor is supposed to represent the state party. But Bredesen is so out of step with the Democratic Party nationally, that he told Obama not to come to Tennessee. And the result was that McCain coattails were extended even further to deliver the entire General Assembly to the Republicans.
Thank God, literally, that there is someone with the integrity and courage of Minority Leader Odom to restore some sense of dignity and principle to the Democratic Party in Tennessee. Odom has most recently stood up for TennCare and against caps on enrollees, something Bredesen didn't like.
Odom will be sorely needed when Bredesen focuses $1 billion in budgets cuts on the weakest among us. Just for the sake of any republic, Tennessee needs a distinct two-party system of competing values and principles. So does any state and this nation. And that's how Obama apparently swept into office.
Go get 'em Gary! For the little that it's worth, I've got your back.
