If you want to feel good, read this NYT story

Despite all the bad economic news, a governor charged with trying to sale a seat to the U.S. Senate and Oprah's weight ballooing to 200 pounds, the following story in The New York Times is reaffirming and inspiring.

The news is this: The famed Tuskegee Airmen -- who experienced the worst of discrimination and the toughest of fighting in the skies over Europe during WWII -- have been invited by the Obama inauguration committee to attend the swearing in of the first African-American president of the United States of America.

Franklin, TN, is home to one of these extraordinary heroes. It has been my honor to shake his hand.

Little did these giants of American history believe that this nation would one day elect a black president when first they were not allowed to fly and fight for their country, and then they were subjected to humiliation and the greatest risk when they were finally called to duty.

Until I read this story, I was not overly sentimental about Obama's election. Sure I endorsed him before the Texas primary in Spanish-language newspapers across the country. But a lot of people await their firsts for the highest office in the land -- women, particularly.

But this story got me. And so Jan. 20th will bring tears to my eyes, too.
